Grade 3 & 4
Light and Sound

Light and Sound

One of our science units is very interactive and is split into two main focuses: principles of light and sound. Among other activities and experiments, students created their own pinhole camera, wore diffraction glasses to see the spectrum of colour in white light, and explored lasers and mirrors, a broken straw, and a disappearing penny.

For sound, we demonstrated how sound is made by vibrations by looking at salt on a stretched balloon and a string telephone, heard how sound traveled through different mediums (air, water, and solid) and tested which material would absorb sound the best. We also made a straw instrument and kazoo to investigate volume and pitch.

Listen with some noise canceling headphones on 😁 There’s a reason we did it outside!
