Hands

Over the past few weeks in kindergarten our class has really enjoyed learning about measuring. It has been a really great opportunity for some hands-on practice. How many candles long is the desk? (26) How many feathers long is the carpet ? (37) I am thankful for these little hands that are learning so much.

Pumpkin Patch

Yesterday was a very special day kindergarten: we were able to go on a field trip to a local pumpkin patch!  It was an exciting day for each of the children.  God’s gifts and presence were evident throughout each part of the day: the kindness of the bus driver; the welcome from Farmer Christine; the learning; the beautiful warm and…

Temple Treasures

We have been learning about King Solomon and all his wisdom wealth.  As a hands on way to learn about the construction of the temple, the class was able to building their own Solomon’s temple.  We read from the Bible how it was built, and after that…. the sky wasn’t the limit as far as creativity and supplies. It always…

Each Day

I am learning what a beautiful thing it is to teach, interact with, and “live life” with the students.  As I do, a whole range of emotions usually results. Like the day I said the students could bring their stuffy to school as a treat….. and found this guy sitting in at my desk when I walked in.  What FUN!…

Heavy Laden

“Mrs. Snoek, did you cut a tree down on your day off?” asked a student as she saw me walk in to school carrying a stump. “Why is there a stump in the classroom?” The stump in question is the Jesse Tree, a beautiful tradition I learned about only a few years ago.  Each day the students and I read…

One Liners

One of the things I love about teaching grades 1 and 2 is that when things start getting serious…. the students have a way of reminding me not to bother. This was the case on our City Hall field trip, as I alluded to earlier. “It’s a dandelion! ” “It’s a pufferfish!” “It’s a disco ball!” (No, it’s the light…

City Hall

We have recently started a new social studies unit about our local community.  To help the students better understand the idea of citizens and local leadership, we took a field trip to City Hall. Before our tour we took opportunity to explore Confederation Park, a worthwhile outing for us all.   During our tour, we were very blessed to have…

Fulfillment

We have been enjoying learning about the life and times of Moses in Bible class.  This week we talked about the ten plagues and about the Passover. Yesterday we were able to participate in a very basic version of the Passover meal.  It was a very sensory experience for us all to see how the food on the plate represents…

We Remember

Today, after much preparation, conversation, and thought processing, our class was honoured to lead the Remembrance Day assembly.  I was very pleased with the respect our class, and the entire student body, showed as we remembered veterans and those affected by war. To close our assembly, each student placed a poppy on a cross. In Flanders fields the poppies blow…

A Walk in the Park

This week we wrapped up our mapping unit with a mapping walk.  The students were put in small groups and given a map from school to a mystery location in the nearby community.  They had to remember and use what we learned about proper mapping, and they had to work together to make sure they were following the map. The…
